The Dewan Negara is not a rubbish bin to recycle BN candidates who have been rejected by voters, so that they can enter through the back door and become appointed senators, and later on to become deputy ministers and ministers, says the DAP.DAP Perak secretary cum national treasurer Nga Kor Ming (right) said that the Dewan Negara is an important institution of democracy, which functions to study, debate and pass laws submitted through the Dewan Rakyat.“Hence the candidates should be credible enough to be elected by the people to the senate posts, like it is being practised in the USA, Philippines and Japan.
“(We ought to hold) elections now, to elect the best candidate to enter the August House and represent the people's aspirations, (so that the) public interests (are safeguarded),” argued Nga, the Taiping MP and Pantai Remis assemblyperson. At present, senators to the Dewan Negara are appointed, and they “owe their loyalty to their BN masters and become mere rubber stamps to rush through important laws” that should have been carefully studied and debated before being passed, he said. This "rubber stamping" could act against the public's interest, especially if laws are passed without proper cosideration. This system, says Nga, has provided a loophole that is being taken advantage of by politicians.“This is a new phenomena, whereby BN (admits) political rejects using the Dewan Negara as a back door entry to become ministers and deputy ministers, thereby circumventing the people's rejection of them,” he reasoned.
Rakyat should appoint senators
Nga named some of the back door entries, such as Gerakan chief Koh Tsu Koon (right), MCA vice president Donald Lim, MIC deputy chief G Palanivel, former MCA Wanita chief Chew Mei Fun, MCA vice president Gan Peng Shiu and former PKR youth chief Ezam Mohd Nor, none of whom were elected by the rakyat.“What is BN's criteria in the selection of such political rejects as senators?” he asked. He calls on Prime Minister Najib to “walk the talk” in showing his sincerity in practising his mantra “people first”, by initiating an electoral process to select Dewan Negara senators so that the people, and not politicians, can decide.Nga said this to 3,000 supporters at a recent three-day democratic carnival organised by Pakatan in Batu Kurau near Taiping.Other speakers at the function included Pakatan leaders such as Perak Pakatan chief cum Bukit Gantang MP Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.
