JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak expressed hope that MIC, a component party of Barisan Nasional (BN), can resolve its internal conflict soon.Najib, who is also the BN chairman, said the MIC conflict had become a hot topic among MIC leaders who have expressed a need for change in the party, the biggest party that represents Indians in the country."I hope the internal conflict can be resolved by MIC quickly," said Najib. who is also the Finance Minister after opening the Aero Mall and Senai Aviation Park at Senai Airport here today.
He is on a day-long visit to Johor.According to Najib, what was important now was for MIC to play an important role in regaining the confidence of the people to support the ruling party.
The prime minister was commenting on the recent spat between MIC president S Samy Vellu and MIC deputy Youth chief V Mugilan who had urged the former to relinquish his seat before his intended departure next year. The call for Samy Vellu's exit gained momentum when two other central working committee (CWC) members -- G Kumar Aamaan and KP Samy -- joined the fray yesterday, demanding the long-time party president to go as soon as possible rather than wait for the timetable he had drawn up.
Najib, however, did not want to comment on Samy Vellu's decision to exit as party president, eight or nine months before his term ends in May 2012."I don't want to comment because it is an internal matter of MIC," he said.Meanwhile, Najib, when asked about the debt crisis beleaguering Greece and several European countries, said Malaysia has been monitoring the matter closely in case there are repercussions on the country's economy. At present, he said, there was no indication the problem could lead to a contagion effect, like the United States' banking and financial crisis which precipitated a global crisis.
Nevertheless, he said Malaysia could not afford to be complacent and would monitor the development closely.
