Online poll to 'oust' Samy Vellu

Sacked MIC Youth deputy chief V Mugilan has launched a blog to kick-start Gerakan Anti-Samy Vellu (GAS), with a poll to gauge whether the long-time party president should step down immediately.

Mugilan in a text message, had asked friends and supporters to "show some numbers to the world" and vote to oust Samy Vellu, who has held the top post for 31 years. He had launched GAS on Saturday with the help of those who were 'ruthlessly' sacked in the past. 'Who wants (a) change in MIC's leadership in order to gather (the) Malaysian Indian community under one MIC?
Please log in to vote for the Indian future in Malaysia under shelter of MIC,' he said. The blog launched on Sunday carries articles on Mugilan lashing out at Samy Vellu and demanding his resignation.Claiming that Samy Vellu has overstayed his welcomed, Mugilan said he fears that BN might be wiped out in the next general election if there is no change at the head of MIC. Former Petaling Jaya Selatan MIC division chief V Subramaniam, better known as Barat Maniam, and central working committee (CWC) member G Kumar Aman have jumped on the bandwagon.Mugilan and Subramaniam have since been expelled from the party, but are expected to appeal.
Umno has been drawn in, with the allegation that it has paid RM3 million to back Mugilan's movement. However, Kumar Aman has dismissed this."T Mohan (MIC Youth chief) has always discouraged us from meeting with Khairy Jamaluddin and Umno Youth, because (he is) afraid that Mugilan is trying to curry favour from Umno," he told Malaysiakini. Despite having been dissuaded from fraternising with the Umno Youth, Kumar Aman said he owes his gratitude to Khairy for "opening their minds". However, he was quick to add that Khairy has not expressed support for GAS. Kumar Aman also claimed to have received "threats using foul language" on his mobile phone, but refused to elaborate. He hoped that the movement against Samy Vellu would lead to increasing the representation of youth in MIC. "Mohan did nothing for the youth, who are now left behind and are involved in illegal activities," said Kumar Aman.

Secretive appointment

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a CWC member confided that "more than two-thirds" of the elected members want Samy Vellu out. "He does not want to go and we don't know why he wants to stay with so many people against him," he said. Another CWC member backed the claim, saying that 18 of the 23 elected members are "extremely unhappy" with Samy Vellu (left). The last straw was the "hush-hush" appointment of Vell Paari - Samy Vellu's son- to the CWC. "None of the members were aware of this deal until the CWC meeting two weeks ago. We were completely caught by surprise... and we are not letting this go like everything else," he said.Although cautious about expressing support for GAS, he said he was puzzled when Mugilan took on Samy Vellu. "I'm not sure why he (Mugilan) is doing it now. All I can tell you is that we are not happy with Samy Vellu either."As at 6pm today, 75 people had voted in support of Mugilan's call, while three objections were registered.Samy Vellu has announced that he will step down "seven to eight months" before his presidency expires in March 2012.
