Perak Chinese resist BN's lure

The BN-led Perak government is said to be banging its head on a brick wall in efforts to win over the state's Chinese Malaysian community.Playing his latest political card on Sunday, Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir included four national and state MCA leaders in the Perak BN coordinating committee to prepare for the next general election.
They are party president cum Perak liaison chief Chua Soi Lek, state MCA secretary Tan Chin Meng, Perak Youth chief Mah Hang Soon and party secretary-general Kong Cho Ha.
Reacting, Perak DAP vice-chairperson A Sivanesan said sarcastically, “Zambry can add 40 or 400 MCA members to his committee to try and win Chinese votes.“The political reality and fact remains that once the Chinese community has lost confidence with BN, there is no way they will return. To the Chinese, a vote for BN means a vote for Umno, which has treated non-Malays as second-class citizens.”
Sivanesan said the community no longer blindly supports BN, as was shown in the recent Sibu by-election outcome.Parti Sosialis Malaysia national coordinator K Kunasekaran noted that Zambry's people-friendly initiatives are not reflected in the way his office staff deals with problems.“The first question they ask complainants is whether they have come to the office with the support of the opposition. If the answer is 'yes', they are given the cold shoulder,” Kunasekaran alleged.“We were able to communicate better with previous BN menteri besar Mohd Tajol Rosli (Mohd Ghazali), who always listened to the people's problems irrespective of their political leanings.”

Aborted move

When Zambry took office in February last year, he appointed state Gerakan chief Chan Ko Youn to look after the interests of the Chinese community.During the Chinese New Year celebrations earlier this year, he held an 'open house' at his official residence. However, the community has remained reticent, apparently because of the BN's decision to stop the conversion of land in Chinese new villages from leasehold to freehold status. The ousted Pakatan-led state government had embarked on this before its grip on administration was dislodged by the Federal Court decision on Feb 9 declaring that Zambry is the lawful menteri besar of Perak.
