MIC rebels: 'PM must step in'

Three recently-sacked MIC leaders have urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step in to end the ongoing row between party president S Samy Vellu and his detractors. The three are party central working committee members KP Samy, G Kumar Amaan and youth wing deputy chief V Mugilan, who were all sacked for criticising Samy Vellu's delayed retirement plans."The prime minister is doing his best for the community... it is not MIC president S Samy Vellu, as he (the latter) likes to claim, who is helping the Indian community," said KP Samy during an hour-long press conference in Klang today.

Flanked by Kumar and Mugilan, KP Samy repeated past remarks that the only way the BN can retain Indian support is by removing Samy Vellu, whom he labeled as the "obstacle". "In what way the BN can get the support back? Despite Najib's best effort the obstacle that stands in the way is Samy Vellu, because everything the government has given goes to his cronies or his (personal) investments.
"The prime minister must decide now, if he wants assets like us or liabilities like Samy Vellu," said KP Samy.

Nepotism unlimited

KP Samy also lashed out at Samy Vellu for practising nepotism by appointing his son Vel Paari into the powerful Central Working Committee (CWC). "The press carried the news that Vel Paari (right) was unanimously appointed. He should have been sacked from the party because it was he who did not tell the truth."The party president has the power to appoint whoever he wants - wife, daughter-in-law or son - but don't send the wrong message... because I know nothing is unanimously agreed in the CWC ever since I was elected CWC member," he said."His son is in the CWC, his daughter-in-law is the Puteri deputy, his caste man is the Youth chief - this is proof that the MIC family runs the political party."He also cautioned deputy president G Palanivel, saying that he could face the boot soon as Samy Vellu will not spare anyone in the way of his plans."Samy Vellu wants his son to be president (and he will do so) by sacking everybody," he said, adding that he forsees Samy Vellu will retract his promise to leave come September next year.

Failed businesses

KP Samy said Samy Vellu is also directly responsible for the failures of party-owned Maika Holdings and Maju Institute for Educational Development (MIED)."Maika's RM1 share should be worth at least RM30 now, but what has he and his son done to fix the problem?" he asked.Under a government-brokered deal, tycoon G Gnanalingam would buy back RM100 million in shares from 66,000 shareholders who had suffered from falling share prices over the past 26 years. The party is also reeling from accusations that millions were squandered by MIED, which is the party's education arm.KP Samy also lashed out at party vice-presidents S Subramaniam, M Saravanan and SK Devamany who claimed that the party was not in crisis. "That is the joke of 2010. What is Maika Holdings then? Isn't its failure an MIC's crisis? MIED belongs to the Indian community and is worth billions of ringgit. Until now we don't know if it is owned by the community or an individual. Isn't this a crisis?"
No backing from Umno

In another development, Mugilan has denied claims that the Gerakan Anti-Samy (GAS) was an Umno-backed operation. "By pointing fingers at third parties it shows that Samy Vellu (left) and his son are trying to get back at me through the back door as they are afraid of the support I'm getting," he said. Mugilan adds that MIC's problems were not because of third-parties but due to "weak and selfish leadership" resulting in a lack of direction for the party. "Throughout (Samy Vellu's) years in politics and in the cabinet, he has kept quiet on the policies of BN. Why only now he blames (Umno), when in all the annual general meetings he never fails to praise them?" he asked. He was referring to claims by Vel Paari yesterday that Umno was supporting GAS. The launching of the GAS movement is scheduled to be held in Putra World Trade Centre this Sunday. Mugilan previously claimed that thousands of disgruntled party members are expected to attend.
