Postponed 'Melayu Bangkit' rally now on June 14

The "Melayu Bangkit" programme organised by the People's Awakening Movement (Gertak) which was postponed for security reasons will be held on June 14.Gertak chairman Razali Idris said the agenda remained the same, to discuss issues affecting the Malays like the New Economic Policy (NEP), Vision 2020 and unity efforts.

"Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will deliver the keynote address at Negeri Stadium to be attended by over 20,000 people including those from outside Terengganu," he was quoted by Bernama as saying today.Razali said he hopes that the strained ties between Malays due to politics could be improved for the sake of the country's stability. He also said there had been some misunderstanding over the word 'gertak.' While the word is usually used in the sense of 'scare' or 'intimidate,' Razali said the word in the Terengganu dialect means bridge.Non-Malays too could join the programme but they had to send a letter to the organiser, he added. The application for the rally permit would be sent in to the police tomorrow.
Gertak had originally planned to hold the event on May 13 - coinciding with the 41st anniversary of the country's worst spate of racial violence - as part of efforts to increase awareness of the dangers of ignoring the lessons of history.Following a public outcry, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak ordered the event to be postponed.
