The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied that it stopped Kapar MP S Manikavasagam from attending an inquiry by the Selangor Select Committee on Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) into a case on sand theft.
It said in a statement today that its officers only advised Manikavasagam that the contents of his complaint to the MACC could not be divulged to any individual or party because they were governed by section 29 (4) of the MACC Act 2009.The provision states, among other things, that any complaint made to the MACC is confidential and cannot be divulged until the person concerned is charged in court.
The MACC said that any complaint made to it could not be divulged because it could affect its investigation.
It was commenting on a report on the news portal Malaysiakini that said Manikavasagam (left) could not attend the Selcat inquiry on the instruction of the MACC.MACC said Manikavasagam had contacted it to seek its views on whether or not he could divulge the contents of the complaint he had made regarding a sand theft case involving Kuala Semesta Sdn Bbhd (KSSB)."However, the MACC officers did not express any restraint on the Kapar MP from attending the Selcat inquiry on the date fixed," it said.
