PETALING JAYA, June 8 — A second rally against MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu in Klang on June 13 has been postponed for another three weeks. But leaders of the Anti-Samy Vellu Movement, better known by its Malay acronym GAS, said they may spring a surprise rally elsewhere in the meantime.
Sacked MIC Youth chief, V. Mugilan, told reporters here today the Klang rally was called off due to “safety” concerns.“Cronies” of the long-serving party president had allegedly incited their followers at the MIC Selangor’s recent annual general meeting (AGM) to swarm to the gathering on Sunday for a face-off with GAS supporters, Mugilan claimed.New arrangements were required to deal with the larger number of participants, he added, but refused to say how many he expected to turn up.
Ex-MIC central working committee (CWC) member and GAS leader K.P. Samy said they also wanted to provide Samy Vellu’s men a chance to speak out at the gathering.Fewer than 3,000 people had turned up at the first GAS rally at the Mines Convention Centre in Seri Kembangan on May 30.Mugilan had previously forecasted a crowd of at least 15,000 and promised to disband GAS if the turnout was poor.He was reported to have said that a poor turnout would show the party wanted Samy Vellu as president for life.
But Mugilan defended maintaining GAS, arguing that the movement had made the long-serving president budge from his initial stand to retire only at the end of his three-year term.“Before we launched GAS, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu said he would finish his term in 2012. Later, he said he would retire eight or seven months before end of term.“After we launched GAS, he changed again. In Johor, he said this is his last AGM. That shows our pressure is shaking Datuk Seri Samy Vellu. So we want to pressure him until he steps down,” Mugilan said.
