MIC president S Samy Vellu has described the appointment of his deputy, G Palanivel, as Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister as a golden opportunity that could help the Indian community.
He said this was important for them as the majority lived and worked in estates.
"I am confident that he will do the best to ensure the welfare of the Indian community is looked after, especially in the estates," he said when launching the 64th Selangor MIC convention in Kajang today.
He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for the appointment. Najib, in a small Cabinet reshuffle last Tuesday, appointed Palanivel, who was made a senator on May 3, as Deputy Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister.
