KUALA LUMPUR: The Ampang MIC division has thrown its support behind embattled party president S Samy Vellu, saying Gerakan Anti-SamyVellu (GAS) was redundant.Division information chief S Puvendhiran said Samy Vellu's exit was now a non-issue and continued rallies were unnecessary. He was referring to GAS’s proposed gathering in Klang on June 13.
"The GAS rally in Klang is now unnecessary. People should understand that Indians are a small community in Malaysia.“It is unhealthy to fight among ourselves. It does not do any good for our community.
“We are asking the police not to issue a permit for this rally,” he told reporters at the MIC headquarters today. Also present were chairman of nine MIC branches and a six grassroots leaders from Ampang.
Puvendhiran said Samy Vellu had been democratically elected by branch chairmen nationwide and he should be allowed to step down when his term ends.“The president has already announced his retirement date during the Wilayah MIC AGM and we should respect it.“To force his early exit is undemocratic,” he said.
Puvendhiran also criticised the incident in which a senior citizen had thrown a shoe at Samy Vellu’s photo during the GAS rally at the Mines Convention Centre on May 30.He said former deputy Youth chief V Mugilan (photo) and his team must be held responsible for creating a situation enabling the elderly man to fling the shoe.“Mugilan should stop slamming at Samy Vellu. The president will step down.
“If Mugilan has waited this long, then another few months should not be too difficult,” he said, adding that the division would be happy to see Mugilan back in MIC’s fold.
