MIC against move to scrap UPSR exam

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC president S Samy Vellu said the party is against any move to abolish the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination. “I appeal to the Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister MuhyiddinYassin not to proceed with the proposal as it will be a grave mistake,” he said in a statement today. He said the examination was aimed at assessing the students’ capabilities and achievements throughout their primary level education.

“The UPSR was introduced based on expert opinion because they (the experts) are aware of its usefulness in assessing the students’ mind after a certain period.“If the UPSR is abolished, students will not have the initiative to study and will become mere machines, while teachers also will not have or take the initiative to prepare their students for assessments,” he said.Samy Vellu was commenting on Muhyiddin’s statement on June 20 that his ministry had proposed that the UPSR and Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) be abolished to make the education system less examination-oriented to achieve the desired objective of a holistic education.

Samy Vellu said with more and more students in Tamil schools scoring straight A’s in the UPSR every year, the examination has proved its worthiness. He said Malaysia should not emulate the education systems in other countries but instead should have its own standard.“I will also bring up the matter to the prime minister,” he added.
