Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has urged his supporters in the youth wing to stop commenting on his exclusion from the new cabinet lineup and concentrate on their duties.“Thank you for trying to show support but just do your work and don't get sidetracked by this," Khairy (left) told Malaysiakini.“I hope that everyone respects the Prime Minister's vision with regards to the change in cabinet and I don't want to hear any comments from Umno Youth leaders,” he added.
Khairy was responding to comments made by several state Umno Youth leaders who expressed disappointment when their leader was overlooked for the second time by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for a ministerial position. In his second cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, Najib broke BN's longstanding tradition to appoint the Umno Youth chief, who is the de facto BN Youth chief, to a cabinet position. Instead, Najib appointed Khairy's deputy Razali Ibrahim and Mukhriz Mahathir, who hold no elected central party post, as deputy ministers.
KJ not disappointed
Khairy said he does not endorse the views of his supporters, adding that they had spoken out of line as the premier had the sole prerogative to choose members of his cabinet.“Of course one or two of (the state leaders) made those comments out of their own conviction, so there is nothing much I can do,” he said.
He also brushed off suggestion by some state leaders that the fact that Khairy omission from cabinet would demoralise the youth wing.“It will only be demoralising if you allow it to be, by making a big deal out of it. People support us because of how much work we do, not whether or not we have a government position,” he said.As such, he said that he does not feel dejected for having missed the boat yet again, and will continue with his duties.“I am not expecting anything, I am quite clear about what I need to do and it is not about getting a cabinet appointment,” he said.
