Vell Paari: My father rejected Tunship

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 — S. Vell Paari said today Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu had rejected the award of a Tunship as well as an ambassadorial position, and claimed this showed his father was not clinging to power as MIC president. Vell Paari claimed that the MIC president rejected the proposal when a compromise was reached before the Hulu Selangor by-election last month.“This shows that my father does not want to stay in office or the government as claimed by certain parties.
This proves that my father is not someone who wants to stay in his post forever… this is not true.“I want to tell you today, my father refused when the prime minister’s special officer met my father during the Hulu Selangor by-election and offered him the title Tun and appointment as an ambassador. My father said no and he did not want to accept the offer,” he told The Malaysian Insider. He added that his father wanted to focus on solving the issues affecting Maika Holdings.Vell Paari, who is also a member of MIC’s central working committee, said that the special officer allegedly asked Samy Vellu to stay in the president’s council and remain as party advisor when he resigns as president.“This position was also rejected by my father,” he said.Vell Paari said that Samy Vellu does not want to stay even one extra day in the party once he resigns.
Samy Vellu has come under relentless pressure to quit immediately despite offering to quit by next year, “eight or nine months” before his term as MIC president ends in 2012.
Several MIC central working committee members are considering breaking ranks with Samy Vellu and his son, and are expected to join sacked MIC Youth deputy leader V. Mugilan’s calls for the 74-year-old veteran to step down by Dec 31 this year. The Malaysian Insider understands they will join the two CWC members — K.P. Samy and G. Kumar Amman — who set a precedent last week by calling for Samy Vellu to step down immediately.Vell Paari said today their demands were “baseless” and explained that even a corporate figure will request a period of six months when resigning.“This is a political party with membership of 700,000 people. We cannot leave the party just like that,” he said.He said that Samy Vellu plans to travel across the country with the party’s deputy president G. Palanivel and show their gratitude to the divisions and division chiefs.“This is also another way to introduce Palanivel to the grassroots and make preparations for Palanivel to lead the party,” he said.Samy Vellu has been president of the MIC since 1979, holding the post for 11 consecutive terms. He has held off all challenges to his position and was the longest-serving member of the Barisan Nasional (BN) Cabinet until he was dumped from Parliament in Election 2008.After losing in Election 2008, it was said that the former federal Cabinet member was aspiring to a Tunship as well an ambassadorial position.
