PWTC cancels booking for GAS rally

Putra World Trade Centre has cancelled the booking for Sunday's Gerakan Anti-Samy Vellu (GAS) rally in its premises.Contacted by FMT, PWTC's events and sales department officer Nur Azwan Ghazali confirmed this.Pressed for further details, Nur Azwan referred FMT to PWTC's chief operating officer Maxson Abdullah but the latter is currently in a meeting.
A check with the operator revealed that only one event has been slated for Sunday booked under the name "Youth Asia".Earlier, sacked MIC Youth deputy chief V Mugilan told FMT that the organisers are negotiating with PWTC.Mugilan, who was sacked last week, blamed MIC president S Samy Vellu for applying pressure on the management of PWTC to cancel the booking."Why is Samy Vellu pressuring PWTC? If he says not more than 3,000 will turn up, then why is he afraid?" he asked. At a press conference in Petaling Jaya earlier, Mugilan said they could hold the gathering outside the MIC headquarters or Batu Caves. As for obtaining a police permit, he said: "That would not be a problem."The choice of venue for the GAS rally has become a hot topic since PWTC also houses the Umno headquarters.Since the onset, speculation is rife that Umno is backing the campaign, while Samy Vellu's son Vell Paari had described Mugilan as a "political assassin" hired by Umno.Previously, MIC Youth chief T Mohan said a check by his men revealed that the booking for the 2pm GAS rally was done under Umno's name.Allegations have also surfaced that Umno is bankrolling GAS by pumping in RM3 million.
Umno leaders have denied any links to the campaign.

'Attempts to bribe members'

Meanwhile, Mugilan also told reporters that he had been informed about attempts to "bribe" MIC members not to attend the rally.Asked who was offering the bribe, he replied: "Samy Vellu, his family and his cronies. I have received more than 50 complaints."Mugilan said MIC members should accept the money if offered.
"If you are given money, take it. That is our money. But make sure you come this Sunday," he said.
