GAS rally a 'success' despite lower turnout

Former MIC deputy youth chief V Mugilan has called today's Gerakan Anti Samy (GAS) rally at the Mines Convention Centre in Serdang a success, despite the use of "gangster tactics" to derail the event.
Only 3,500 people turned up for the rally when Mugilan had expected 15,000.
Mugilan  pinned the blame on the disappointing crowd-size on money being splashed to stop people from joining to the rally.“RM5 million has been spent to stop people from coming to the rally," claimed Mugilan.
"Buses from Penang and Pahang have been stopped. RM5,000 was paid for every bus not to come today."Neverthelss, Mugilan said GAS had succeeded in reaching out to the rakyat to convey its message loudly and clearly.“For one week, we have been in the media and on the Internet. People all over have seen and heard about this. This programme has succeeded in pressing (MIC president) S Samy Vellu to step down,” said Mugilan, adding that even the BBC covered the event.Mugilan's jubilant views was shared by those at the rally, if their thunderous applause for him was any indication.

'MIC a dictatorship'

R Veloo 52 from Klang who is not an MIC member, said that he was there because he was concerned about the welfare of Indians.Every Indian he said should be concerned, because they have short changed by Samy Vellu in so many ways for over 30 years.“MIC is no longer a party based on democracy, but one that is being run by someone who is like a dictator, especially with regards to Maika Holdings.
“No one can question anything. Anyone who does will find themselves beaten up and thrown out. He (Samy Vellu) must step down. He has been there too long," said Veloo. T Sivan, 59, who is also from Klang, said he is also not an MIC member and had attended on behalf of an NGO."I am here to show that the people is united against Samy Vellu," he said.He urged the MIC president to step down immediately, and blamed Samy Vellu for ignoring Indians' affairs and needs.“Things are getting worse and worse. (Not only the people), even the government is asking him to resign," he said angrily.

'MIC members please stand up'

Moments after the rally ended, former MIC central working committee member KP Samy came onstage and asked the thinning crowd to sit back down."All MIC members here, please stand up," he said.Slightly more than half of those still in the audience stood up.KP Samy then asked them if the wanted Samy Vellu out of MIC, which triggered a barrage of cries in the affirmative. The exercise was apparently to prove that many of those in the audience were actually MIC members, contrary to Samy Vellu's claims.
