Samy Vellu is a liar, say former MIC leaders

May 30 — Two former MIC leaders used previously unrevealed documents to knock Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu’s credibility in the most concerted attack against his presidency.V. Subramaniam and K. P. Samy, both MIC central working committee (CWC) members who were sacked earlier this month for demanding Samy Vellu to step down, used the rostrum at a Gerakan Anti-Samy (GAS) gathering here to call the MIC president a liar.

V. Subramaniam, better known as Bharat Maniam, said he was in possession of a document signed by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1983 that clearly sets out the ownership of Maju Institute of Education Development (MIED), the education arm of MIC.“In 1983, Datuk Samy made an application to [Mahathir] for an approval... to set up MIED as an education of MIC or the Indian community,” he said.

“Only through this process [will] the government do funding subsequently, like what the government has funded AIMST (Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology) RM300 million.“This is a document which I have that nobody can say it doesn’t belong to MIC... although he (Samy Vellu) is trying to hijack MIED from MIC.”Samy Vellu has been accused by critics, including former MIED chief executive P. Chitrakala Vasu, of planning to turn MIED into a new and powerful personal fiefdom with his son Vel Paari at its head.

“Only me, I have this document. But the original document is deposited in the bank,” Subramaniam said, while holding aloft a photocopy of a letter bearing the former prime minister’s signature. He was confident that Dr Mahathir would vouch for the veracity of the document if it is shown to him.Another former MIC CWC member, K. P. Samy, gave the press copies of a page from the 2010 MIC budget showing the actual number of party members after a rousing speech to the 4,000 Indians who attended the event.“Datuk Seri Samy Vellu is... full of lies, every day. Morning one lie, evening one lie, following day different [lies],” he said.“He claimed that there are 600,000 [members] in MIC. The special general report released two months ago confirmed there’s only 410,000 members.”

K. P. Samy said that he was not able to reveal the party’s “secret papers” earlier as he was still part of the CWC.“Now, I’m free to release [them].”He promised to release more documents tomorrow through his lawyer proving that Samy Vellu was the cause of former MIC president Tun V. T. Sambanthan’s downfall.
“Datuk Seri Samy Vellu should relinquish his position for the benefit of Barisan Nasional, for the benefit of our beloved prime minister, for the benefit of the nation, for the benefit of the community and for the benefit of the economy.”
