Zul Noordin, where art thou?

Padang Serai parliamentarian N Gobalakrishnan has to step in to oversee the neighbouring Kulim Bandar Baru constituency in Kedah as independent MP Zulkifli Mohd Noordin has apparently gone "missing in action".Zul (right), as he is popularly known, became an Independent when PKR sacked him over the 'Allah' controversy being the last straw to his conservative Islamic stance.Gobalakrishnan claims that the Kulim constitutents are unfazed about Zul's departure from the Pakatan fold, saying his absence has not made any dent in their lives.
"Whenever Zul is ever mentioned, the people in this area say 'good riddance', that it is good he leaves the party now, before he creates more trouble," he added. "Anyway, he is a very busy man now, so busy that he can accompany PM (Najib Abdul Razak) to the US Congress," said Gobalakrishnan sarcastically. Gobalakrishnan, also the party central committee member, chastised BN for harping on the issue of defections and the possibility of fresh state polls, warning that it was a 'state security matter'. The PKR central committee member was not spared the rumours, and was embarrassed when a petrol kiosk operator in Kulim confronted him saying, "We heard you are going to join the Makkal Sakti party.""Why spread such rumours? If the BN is really interested in my leaving PKR, why are they so cheap? Come and offer me a few millions and we can negotiate," he quipped.

'Pretended to work'

Meanwhile, Zulkifli's former colleagues have not seen or heard from the lawyer since his sacking, and are clueless to his whereabouts. In particular, the three Kedah PKR assemblypersons rumoured to be jumping ship are keeping their distance from him. They, along with Gobalakrishnan (left), are especially peeved with Zulkifli for claiming they would be deserting PKR and the state government, hence triggering an early state election.Sidam assemblyperson Tan Show Kang did not hold back his venom in describing Zulkifli as a "very bad person", and was scathing in his speech at the PAS Kota Sarang Semut ceramah last Saturday
"Reporters called me to ask if I would quit PKR. They told me it was Zulkifli who said it, so I merely asked 'who is Zulkifli? I do not know which one you mean as this is a very common name'," he joked to the 2,000-strong crowd. Tan  further said Zulkifli had lied to many people, including former party leaders and members.
He cited how Zulkifli had pretended to be busy attending activities and meetings in his constituency only when party supremo Anwar Ibrahim was present, but in reality hardly met his constituents."He only met one person when he went to Kulim or Bandar Bahru, most of the time he called by telephone to ask about the area," he said."Zulkifli can trick the leaders, but he cannot trick the rakyat," added Tan, who is also a state exco.

'Days in politics numbered'

Sole DAP Kedah assemblyperson Lim Guan Aik also hit out at the Kulim MP, saying, "The people of Kulim is bound to desert him in the next general election, were he to contest again as candidate."He said at the ceramah that unlike Zulkifli, he "will not betray the voters of Kota Darulaman and will be committed to the Pakatan struggle".
Malaysiakini has so far been unable to contact Zulkifli for a response.
