Ex-MIC sec-gen not surprised over sacking

By Clara Chooi KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — MIC secretary-general S. Murugessan, who broke ranks with his embattled president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, feels “nothing” of his sacking from the party post today. He told The Malaysian Insider that when he had finally decided to break his silence and speak out against Samy Vellu this week, he had already known it would only be a matter of days before he would lose the post.“At least there is clarity now of things. I have made my stand clear and I will stick to what I said earlier.“As to what I feel over being sacked, I feel nothing — I don’t feel upset or angry or that now I have an axe to grind with my president,” said Murugessan (picture).

He said he had finally decided to break his silence over the fiasco with the party president after he felt that he “could no longer stay silent”.“I kept silent in the first place because I am the party secretary-general and my duties are to carry out the president’s and the party’s orders.
“But it came to a point that I needed to say something because of feedback from the ground — from voters, from members. So I had to stand up and make a statement, there was little else I could do,” he explained.

Murugessan however reminded that his sacking as the secretary-general did not mean he was also summarily removed from the party’s central working committee.
“I am still an MIC member and I am still in the CWC. I have received no indication that I have been removed from the CWC too,” he said.
Murugessan said that as the post of secretary-general was an appointment by the president to begin with, he would not be able to appeal his sacking.
“For me, there is nothing to appeal. I was appointed by the president and now, I have been removed,” he said.
He noted that Samy Vellu had every right to dismiss him as and when he saw fit.
“It is the prerogative of the president to appoint or dismiss the secretary general.
“I wish to thank the President for giving me the opportunity to contest in Subang and to serve as secretary-general to begin with.“I stood up for what I believed in and I was ready to face the consequences so now, I congratulate Datuk T. Rajagopalu on his appointment and wish him all the best,” said Murugessan.
Rajagopalu, the Negeri Sembilan MIC chief, was appointed as Murugessan’s replacement after Samy Vellu sacked the latter.Murugessan is the latest leader that Samy Vellu has taken action for speaking out against his leadership.
He was censured for condemning the president for his impulsive sacking of several party members including MIC Youth deputy chief V. Mugilan, Bharat Maniam, and two central working committee members.
