Ex-MIED CEO's lawyers walk out on sarcastic note .

KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIED chief excutive officer P Chitirakala's lawyers discharged themselves from representing her in the application filed by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to impound her passport.Senior counsel Saseedharan Menon told Sessions Court judge Azizah Mahamud that his client prefers to represent herself in this matter."We are not acting in this particular matter, she is a qualified lawyer and she is going to represent herself," he said before walking out with two other lawyers Prem Shandar and B Muralidharan while the court was still in session.

Speaking to reporters later, Saseedharan revealed that Chitirakala was only a first year law student but wanted to represent herself because of the ordeal she had endured. The lawyer was referring to the former MIED CEO being stopped from boarding a flight to India at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport last week.

DPP gets a roasting

Earlier, Saseedharan lambasted DPP Kevin Morais from MACC for glaring errors in the application where the intitulment (heading) stated “High Court” when it should have read “Sessions Court”."This application was adressed to the High Court in Jalan Duta, when in fact it should be the Sessions Court... we are very embarrased by MACC's failure to make a proper application,” he said. The judge later allowed Morais' verbal application to amend the typo errors on the intitulment. She set tomorrow to hear the application.
MACC had filed an application to impound the passport on the day Chitirakala was supposed to leave the country, after receiving information that she might abscond.
Chitirakala told the press that she had informed the MACC of her travel dates but the commission made no attempts to dissuade her.Questions were also raised as to why the MACC did not apply for her passport to be impounded when she was charged on May 11.Chitirakala, 39, has been charged with three counts of cheating involving RM4 million. She has pleaded not guilty.

The court has fixed June 14 for the mention of the main case.

MIED or Maju Institute of Education Development is the education arm of MIC. It became the focal point of investigations after Chitirakala and MIC president S Samy Vellu accused each other of wrongdoings.
