SUBANG JAYA - Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim today expressed his intention to table a Freedom of Information Act at the next state assembly sitting in August. Speaking at the Bloggers United Malaysia 2010 gathering today, Khalid said it is very important for the government to create an environment which is open and transparent."We are trying to ensure that all exco members report documents and declarations of state executive assets when they hold office in Selangor with the implementation of this Act."Even though the federal government opposes this Act, we intend to enact it as we believe it is in our interest to ensure that the public is well informed to make matured decisions on issues.
" He added.Khalid however expects opposition from the federal government regarding this decision but is prepared to head to court to implement the Act in the state.Khalid also said that the Freedom of Information Act is a legislation that is in existence in major democracies all over the world and it is only right that it be enacted.He also expressed his wish for all states in Malaysia to enact it.When speaking on how he intends to bridge the divide between the state government and the public, he said: "We have introduced Selangor TV that enables viewers to watch debates going on in state assemblu sittings and Selcat hearings.""All this is done with the hope of being able to distribute every single dollar in resources given to the government to the people of Selangor," he said.Khalid donated RM10,000 to the organisers of this event.
