Ministry mulls licence for teachers

May 21, 10 3:54pm
Teachers may be required to sit for an exam to obtain their teaching licence to pursue their teaching profession just like doctors and lawyers, if the Education Ministry's proposal is accepted.

Deputy Education Minister Puad Zarkashi said the licensing was proposed as an initiative to ensure professionalism in the teaching profession and to avoid bogus teachers or those involved in criminal activities to remain in the profession.

"Professionalism in teaching is our utmost priority and the ministry is always looking at ways to improve and safeguard the quality of teachers.

"That is why we fell teachers must go through an assessment test before being given a licence to teach, just like doctors, lawyers or accountants," he told reporters after a PTA meeting at SMK Kemumin near Pengkalan Chepa today.Puad said since the proposal was only at the initial stage, a detailed study was needed and many factors taken into consideration.

"It will not be an easy task to carry out such a licensing process since there are about 390,000 teachers in the country but the proposal must be given a serious thought," he said.Meanwhile, Puad expressed regret over an incident in Sarawak which involved a 32-year-old teacher who was believed to have raped five pupils at a primary school in Bungan, Dalat near Sibu, Sarawak on May 8.

Yesterday, five pupils of the school who alleged that they were raped by a teacher, lodged a police report at the Sibu police headquarters.According to reports, one victim was raped at the teacher's quarters while four others were raped at the school lab.

Puad said the matter had been handed over to the police for investigation and urged the public to refrain from making any assumption of teachers based on the incident
