MIC Youth leader dares Samy to debateS

May 20, 10
4:44pmMIC Youth deputy chief V Mugilan today upped the ante in his attacks on party president S Samy Vellu by challenging the latter to an open debate at the party headquarters on Sunday.

Mugilan's challenge follows his scathing criticism of Samy Vellu during a press conference yesterday for, among others, delaying plans to step down.

Mugilan (left) turned on Samy Vellu yesterday, claiming that should the latter wait until September next year to retire as planned, his anointed successor would not have enough time to reform the party in time for the next general election.

"If he (Samy Vellu) is brave, he should take up my challenge," Mugilan said today in a text message to reporters.

Mugilan said he was calling for the debate because Samy Vellu had accused him of being wrong and trying to sabotage the Barisan Nasional during the Hulu Selangor by-election.

"I am fighting on the same ground. I am upset he is using Hulu Selangor as the reason."

Basically, he said, he wanted Samy Vellu to tell in the debate what he has done for the MIC as its chief for the past 30 years, while Mugilan himself would explain what he has done as Hulu Selangor Youth chief for the past 10 years.

"He must say why he should stay, and I will debate why he should go," Mugilan added.

'Go to hell!'

In an immediate response, Samy Vellu dismissed Mugilan's challenge.

"You ask him (Mugilan) to go to hell," he said sternly when contacted.

Mugilan was among the first few MIC leaders to have openly protested Samy Vellu's plans to stay on as president, pending the handing over of duties to his current deputy G Palanivel (right).

Soon after Mugilan's press conference, Samy Vellu issued a statement condemning him and warning that action would be taken against him for allegedly working against the party during the Hulu Selangor by-election.

Samy Vellu also accused Mugilan of being a stooge for unnamed quarters.

Pressure is mounting within MIC to dethrone Samy Vellu, who has been at the helm of the party since 1979, with many members believing that he is increasingly becoming a liability.
