They're Back! HINDRAF Accuses UMNO Of Engineering Racism, Plans Protest March

Kuala Lumpur - The Hindu Rights Action Force of HINDRAF is back in the limelight after a long hiatus. This time, it plans to organise a protest March, scheduled on February 27 at KLCC to “show solidarity against racism perpetrated by UMNO and its allies. The coalition of several mostly Indian-based NGO’s have laid low for three years, following the acceptance and launch of BN friendly Makkal Sakti party by Prime Minister Najib Razak.

However, the recent “Interlok” issue has forced the radical movement out into the open again. In a media statement, its purported National co-ordinator W. Sambulingam said that , “despite various repeated attempts by the Malaysian Indian community, the UMNO/BN government refuse to remove the “INTERLOK” novel as a compulsory read for the Form Fivers.”
“Where countries are moving and building nationhood by abolishing racism, the UMNO government aided and abetted by their allies are encouraging racism further to extend their political hegemony through the artificial Malay supremacy agenda,” the statement continues. He also accused UMNO of ‘engineering’ a plan to further “plant the seed of racism and segregation in schools by brain-washigng the minds of youths through programs that is akin to those run by the controversial BTN (Biro Tata Negara) with the introduction of “Interlok” in schools.

“Tolerance and co-existence has been abused and misused, patience has been taken for granted endlessly. It is time to bury racism in Malaysia and it is the time to take the bull by the horn,” the statement contained. The March 2008 general election, HINDRAF had proven to be one of the triggers for change in the course of the country that have led to the political tsunami against Barisan Nasional. The general dissatisfaction with the ruling regime which had been brewing for some years exploded with a major rally involving tens of thousands by Hindraf Rally in November 2007.
