Brickfields residents: Two-way street will cause traffic chaos

BRICKFIELDS residents are unhappy with the announcement made by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail that Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad will revert to a two-way street by end of March. The residents are saying that if Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad reverts to its original two-way street and with traffic still coming into Jalan Tun Sambanthan, all hell will break loose.Rukun Tetangga Brickfields B chairman S.K.K Naidu expressed dissapointment with the mayor decision.“No one consulted us. We have had a series of meetings with Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin on this matter and the last one was held on Sept 30 last year.

“The minister was concerned about the traffic dispersal system in Brickfields and assured us that our proposal will be looked into,’’ Naidu said.Naidu said DBKL was supposed to invite the RT and other stakeholders for a discussion on the matter before submitting the proposal to the FT Minister.“Raja Nong Chik told us to be patient and wait until April when all road construction work is completed.“We have urged DBKL not to divert the main road traffic from Jalan Tun Sambanthan into Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad where there are 12 schools, places of worship, community halls, institutions for the handicapped and government quarters,’’ he said.

Naidu added that the RT had even submitted a memorandum signed by major stakeholders and associations of Brickfields objecting to the proposed one-way traffic system.“Even a memorandum was sent to the Prime Minister where his political secretary Datuk Shahlan Ismail met us. Despite all this, DBKL still went ahead with the project.Traffic is high in Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad and people have trouble crossing the road.“We have told them many times not to bring main road traffic into Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad. It is not fair to the residents who have to suffer the massive development of KL Sentral and it goes against the spirit of 1Malaysia and putting people first.“Raja Nong Chik is considering our proposals and DBKL must do the same,’’ Naidu said.
Resident K. Sivam said if main road traffic was allowed into Sultan Abdul Samad there would be chaos.
Sivam’s sentiment is echoed by Ahmad Fauzi a blind resident who lives at the Palm Court Condominium.“Things are going to be even worse for me and I dread to think of the consequence of the mayor’s decision,’’ Ahmad Fauzi said.
