KUALA LUMPUR: The government has given the Bukit Jalil estate residents one week to decide whether to accept its new offer of RM23,000 each to move out of their homes.Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the new offer was the best the government could do for the plantation workers.The new offer is more than the RM5,000 previously offered by the government as compensation for having to move out.“My ministry and the Human Resources Ministry have decided that the Bukit Jalil residents will be moved to a new place regardless of whether they accept or refuse the new offer.“This is the government’s final decision and there will be no more ‘bargaining’ with the residents.
“We agreed to everything they asked. The temple, school and cemetery will remain at the current location.“So, what more do they want from us?” Nong Chik asked. He was speaking to reporters at the Putra Jaya Holdings Bhd office in Putrajaya.Also present at the press conference was his deputy M Saravanan and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) authorities.Bukit Jalil is a long-standing issue involving 39 families who refused to move out of the Bukit Jalil estate after the government acquired the land in 1980 for redevelopment. The land is now owned by Bukit Jalil Sdn Bhd.
The 39 families have refused to budge despite eight DBKL notices for them to leave.Nong Chik said DBKL would issue the 39 families a notice on March 1, 2011 and will relocate them in low-cost flats on March 15.
The flats are located opposite the estate.Meanwhile, one of the estate residents, K Balakrishnan, said the residents would be meeting soon to discuss the new offer.“We will call for a press conference on Friday,” he said.
