PETALING JAYA: Former members of the defunct Gerakan Anti Samy Vellu (GAS) have thrown their support behind MIC president G Palanivel, and asked his predecessor not to interfere in the party.This followed a report in FMT yesterday that S Samy Vellu, angered by Palanivel's move to bring back several sacked leaders, was sharpening his knives for the new president.
Commenting on this, former GAS coordinator V Mugilan urged Samy Vellu to keep away from MIC politics and allow Palanivel to do his job.“He should respect the new president by not interfering in the latter's presidential duties. Follow the example set by former MCA president Dr Ling Liong Sik and former Gerakan president Dr Lim Keng Yaik who never interfered in party affairs after quitting their post,” he said.
The outspoken Mugilan also reminded Samy Vellu that the delegates elected Palanivel because he was a capable leader.“Palanivel was elected twice as deputy president as they knew he was capable to lead the party. So when Samy Vellu left office, Palanivel carried out the role that was entrusted to him,” he said.Since Palanivel was focused on strengthening the party by bringing back its former members into the fold, Mugilan urged Samy Vellu to focus his energy on his new role as a special envoy instead.
In December, Samy Vellu was appointed as a special envoy of infrastructure for India and South Asian region by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.
'Palanivel on the right track'
Another former GAS coordinator, KP Samy said that Palanivel was on the right track.“Palanivel is recalling former members who were expelled as well as those who left voluntarily in order to unite the party,” said the former party central working committee member.He said that following MIC's electoral bruising in 2008, many Indians formed NGOs to champion the community's issues.
“We realise that Palanivel is shouldering a huge responsibility in rejuvenating MIC. In the end, party interest must come before self-interest,” he said.As a leader, he added, Palanivel had no choice but to take risks for the sake of uniting the Indian community under the party.“As of now, the party president seems to be clear in his objective,” he said.Mugilan and KP Samy were among those sacked by Samy Vellu last year for urging the latter to step down.
