History will be among subjects offered for candidates re-sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination from 2014, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Muhyiddin said the decision was made to give students an opportunity to achieve better results in their SPM.
"Currently only Bahasa Malaysia and Mathematic subjects are offered for candidates who wished to re-sit for the SPM," he told senator Yeow Chai Thiam in Dewan Negara today.
Muhyiddin who is also education minister said the format for examinations and appraisal on students would also be revised to provide additional motivation to students during history periods in class.
"So, there will be a number of new initiatives for history subjects when students sit for their SPM in 2013, to avoid remaining in the same sphere as before.
"This will ensure the history subject will have a more effective impact and not just based on examination results alone," he said.
In October, the government announced that apart from Bahasa Malaysia, history will also become a compulsory-pass subject for SPM, starting 2013.
Muhyiddin said that though history will become a must-pass subject by 2013, the ministry would continue to use the same curriculum until 2017 because those in Form One during that time would be sitting for their SPM.
"Once the new curriculum starts for Form One students in 2014, they will become the first batch of students to sit for the new history subject in 2018.
"The move is to give the ministry time to allow teachers to adjust to the new curriculum," he said.
He added that the ministry would also set up a committee to study the new history curriculum and text books to ensure a comprehensive coverage of history that would give an impact and understanding towards the subject.
