MIC Youth advisor S Vell Paari's fortunes in the party are set to improve now that his father S Samy Vellu has resigned as party president. It is an open secret that Samy Vellu had limited his eldest son's role in the party to avoid allegations of nepotism.Speaking to Malaysiakini yesterday, Vell Paari said that there are no longer obstacles for him to pursue a greater role in the party."In terms of my involvement in politics, when father was around he always felt that people will always talk of nepotism if I was around.
"The indications are quite clear that I can go forward in the future. My future is in MIC and in politics," said Vell Paari. In May, Vell Paari was appointed to MIC's central working committee (CWC) which also marked the beginning of a revolt against Samy Vellu's leadership. The appointment was seen as a move by the then MIC president to jump-start his son's political career and cement his legacy before he steps down.
After helming the party leadership for 31 years, Samy Vellu finally resigned from his position yesterday. He is replaced by deputy president G Palanivel.
Optimism
Previously, Vell Paari had declared that he will not vie for any positions in the party elections last year.Part of the reason was due to his involvement in the troubled Maika Holdings Bhd, an investment company founded by Samy Vellu in 1982.The company managed to raise RM106 million from 66,000 investors, comprising mainly low income earners, but company failed miserably to provide returns. At one stage, Vell Paari was made the chief executive officer of the company.
In April, G Team Resources, a firm owned by port tycoon G Gnanalingam, has bought over Maika Holdings Bhd."So now I will be looking forward to moving up the political (ladder)," said Vell Paari, said optimistically.
