PETALING JAYA: Eight families of Bukit Jalil estate, facing imminent eviction by DBKL, are hoping for Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to resolve their predicament. The residents are planning to submit a memorandum tomorrow to the Prime Minister's Department seeking Najib's intervention in their on-going spat with DBKL.S Thiakarajan, the residents' action committee secretary, was hopeful that the premier would take time out to listen to their grouses personally.
He said this after lodging a police report against DBKL at the Bukit Jalil police station today over the latest eviction notices to the 41 families in the estate.Thiakarajan, 57, said the notices were illegal and there was no point talking to DBKL officials.“No proper explanation was given. They said they were just carrying out their duty,” said an irate Thiakarajan. “We hope the prime minister will come to a fair decision after meeting us."
The fresh eviction notices were sent yesterday, a day after the city hall officers, led by its deputy director-general of services Mohd Nordin Abd Aziz and four labour department officials, visited the former estate to verify the status of eight families who claimed that they were former estate workers eligible for compensation.
On Oct 20, the eight families were issued eviction notices who DBKL claimed they were squatters.
KL mayor, Ahmad Fuad Ismail, agreed to retract the notices if they could provide evidence that the residents were kins of former estate workers. The action committee duly complied. The latest notice signed by its safety and enforcement officer, Osman Ismail, indicated that the houses of the eight families will be demolished on Dec 27.
