Neighbour: More than 10 shots fired

The neighbour of 15-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah who was killed by police in April, today testified that he heard “more than 10" shots fired that night.Zafrullah Ahmad Zainal Abidin, 28, whose home at Jalan Silat Gayung 11/3A is located about 10m from the scene, said that he heard 'tap-tap-tap' sounds.“I heard something which sounded like fireworks growing louder and louder from the direction of Jalan Tarian 11/2A.
“The sound was like 'tap, tap-tap-tap, tap, tap-tap'. It was at random (with a lag of) one of two seconds between them,” he told the Shah Alam Session Court today.
Zafrullah , who is the first eyewitness to take the stand, added that the 'tap-tap-tap' sounds were accompanied by police sirens and followed by a “very loud bang”.“I looked through my window and saw that a car had crashed into a wall and two police cars were surrounding the car.“I ran down to the front of my house and saw a man running away in the opposite direction from the (crashed car) and police shouting 'Don't run',” he said.

Legs and torso sprawled outside of car

He said he took another “three or four minutes” to walk over to the scene of the incident to find the deceased's body half-sprawled outside of the car.Zafrullah, a friend of Aminulrasyid's older sibling, then demonstrated to the court that the deceased, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts, was found face-down on the driver's seat, while his legs and half of his torso was outside the Iswara that crashed. This corroborates the statement made by paramedic Muhammad Sahid Abdul Karim about the peculiar position of the body yesterday.

He said that several other bystanders were already there when he arrived at the scene and police cordoned off the area about 30 minutes after that.He added that he had guessed that the 'tap-tap-tap' sounds were gunshots when he saw the gunshot marks in the back windshield of the Proton Iswara.Zafrullah will be cross-examined on Tuesday after the court makes an official visit to the scene to establish the position of the eyewitness' house in relation to the crash.

High-speed chase

Earlier today, the court heard that the car driven by Aminulrasyid was involved in a dangerous and tense high-speech car chase.Lance Corporal Shamsul Kamar Ismail, who was driving the last patrol car to join the chase, testified the Proton Iswara had also beaten the traffic lights at Bulatan Kayangan, Shah Alam. However, during re-examination, Shamsul was unable confirm if the traffic lights were red nor could he estimate the speed of the cars.Shamsul was responding to a radio call by one of the two patrol cars who called in for back-up while in pursuit of the Iswara which was heading to a roundabout from Concorde Hotel. He testified that he did not see nor hear the shootings as he did not enter Jalan Makyong 11/2 with the other cars after the Iswara sped out of the roundabout, and because the siren from his vehicle drowned out other noise.

“I was on stand-by outside of (Jalan Makyong 11/2) in case the (Iswara) decided to turn back out to the main road,” he said.He added that he had got out of his car and approached (accused Jenain Subi) when he later turned into Jalan Tarian.“I saw four police officers and a car that crashed onto a wall. I asked Jenain if he had reported it to the control room, and when he said yes, I headed back to my car,” he said.

No-one else at the scene

He testified that he could not recall if he saw a “budak kecil” (small boy) or other civilians at the scene, either outside or inside the Iswara.Aminulrasyid's friend 15-year-old Azamuddin Omar, who was also in the car, earlier claimed he was assaulted by police but managed to escape after the car crashed.Azamuddin  told lawyer Karpal Singh, who is acting on behalf of the deceased's family, that Aminulrasyid had fallen onto his lap after being shot.He also said that he crawled out of the Iswara's back passenger window before escaping from police.

Jenain Subi is charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder of Aminulrasyid, at Jalan Tarian 11/2 , Section 11, between 1.10am and 2am on on April 26.The teenager's death sparked a national outcry over police use of force.Following this, the Home Ministry has set up a special committee to review the Inspector-General's Standing Orders on the use of firearms.
