MIC wants two minister posts, says veep

SEPANG, Oct 3 — MIC vice-president Datuk S. Subramaniam insisted today the party should get two ministerial posts, signalling his intentions of not relinquishing his job once Senator Datuk G. Palanivel is announced as the party’s interim president. Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu recently announced that he will step down as MIC president in January after leading the party since 1979.However, with Palanivel as party president, leaders within MIC are pressuring Subramaniam to forfeit his post as the human resource minister.

MIC currently only holds one ministerial portfolio and four deputy minister posts in the Prime Minister’s Department, Ministry of Federal Territories and Ministry of Plantation industries.Subramaniam told reporters that MIC should be given two minister posts when asked if Palanivel should be made a minister.“We always have said that MIC should be given two ministers post. So certainly in that line, we can take up the issue with the prime minister,” he said.Palanivel was awarded a senatorship and a position as deputy minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities after he compromised to allow P. Kamalanathan to stand as Barisan Nasional’s candidate in the Hulu Selangor by-election.

Subramaniam also said that there was a new sense of optimism to in the party’s efforts to recapture support from the Indian community under the new leadership.“Certainly not because the old leadership lost support but definitely we all have to work hard together so that we will be focused to ensure that we will win back the lost seats in the 13th general election. All the lost seats in the 12th general election, we will try to win them back to strengthen the party and give us the status that we enjoyed prior to 2008,” he said.
During Election 2008, MIC only managed to retain three of nine parliamentary seats and six of 19 state seats that it contested.
