Gobala moves closer to suspension from PKR

Padang Serai MP N Gobalakrishnan is likely to be suspended as a first step and given the sack later if he continues to ignore the show-cause letter issued by his PKR party for attacking colleagues including Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim over a wide range of issues including alleged ‘rigged elections’ and the closure of a Hindu temple.

“I think PKR has reached the end of its patience with Gobala. He will be suspended at the very least. If he wants to quit, no one is going to stop him. If he continues his attacks, he will be sacked. It is up to him, the party has to be seen upholding discipline. Gobala must learn he cannot simply scream and shout just because he is angry or wants to bargain for something,” a PKR insider told Malaysia Chronicle.

Unprofessional

Just a day ago, the defiant Gobala had accused PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution of being unprofessional because the latter did not post the show-cause letter, but only faxed it.“I only received 25 of the 45-page letter via fax from PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution. I have not received any official letter from them,” the Star reported him as saying.“This shows their unprofessionalism. Their way of sending the show-cause letter is flawed and cannot be accepted.”

Gobala’s guerrilla-style attacks on his party-mates have angered them, and in return, they have accused him of lying and even trying to negotiate a deal with the Umno-BN.A long-time party member, Gobala’s career in PKR has been marked by unpleasant outbursts of temper and shouting matches. He had aligned himself with former FT chief Zaid Ibrahim, whose ‘loose cannon’ style had created a public relations nightmares for the PKR top leadership during its historic direct elections last year.

When Zaid left PKR amid speculation that he had been sponsored by Umno to form a new political party, Gobala was quick to realign himself with Anwar. However, when N Surendran, who joined the party later than him, was made vice-president – a post Gobala had contested but lost – all hell broke loose.

Marking time, both sides

A former MIC Youth leader, Gobala went on the offensive and attacked Anwar and others on Twitter. His accusation that Anwar personally closed down the Sivan Temple in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya was the last straw.Other Indian leaders in PKR moved quickly to distance themselves from him, rallying behind Anwar instead. It was a blow for Gobala, who had hoped to muster greater support for his cause.

Since then, his rhetoric has become more outrageous but apart from attracting the attention of BN-controlled media, he has basically dropped off from the radar and his press conferences hardly attended or reported. “Basically, he has lost the trust of his colleagues. They are fed up with this sort of culture when the party is continuously put to ransom for personal motives. Even if he doesn’t quit and PKR allows him to stay, it will just be for political expediency until the General Election. After all, no one is pressuring him except himself – he is the one who is putting himself on the block for sale. Who would dare to trust such loose cannons,” the PKR source said.
