Fulfil promises before break, Khairy told

REMBAU: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has been urged to fulfil his election promises to his Rembau parliamentary constituents before taking a break from politics.Rembau PKR secretary Norazizi A Aziz said that prior to the 2008 general election, the Oxford-trained politician had made many promises to the voters here.

“Among the promises is the Rembau Hospital, an airport, Universiti UITM Rembau and a free tuition centre for poor children. None of these promises have been fulfilled.“All of a sudden, he now wants to take a break from politics, giving the impression that he has been working tirelessly to serve his constituents,” he told FMT.Khairy, who is the son-in-law of former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had recently announced that he might not be defending the Rembau seat.

In the last general election, the Umno Youth leader had clinched the seat after defeating PKR’s Badrul Hisham Saharin.

Fishing for sympathy

However, Norazizi asked if Khairy’s so-called break was an attempt to escape the wrath of the Rembau people, “who are waiting for his door-to-door campaign (for the next polls) to grill him on the empty promises”.Accusing Khairy of failing to serve the people, the Rembau PKR leader said Khairy’s latest claim was probably an attempt to fish for sympathy and attention from the Umno top leadership.

“Umno Youth is now most weakest in its history under Khairy. I don’t see the wing’s leaders working to serve the people.“Most Umno Youth programmes are mere publicity stunts that do not address the hardship of the people, especially the poor,” said Norazizi.Previously, he added, Umno Youth served as a pressure group within the ruling party but had now been reduced to being just a “yes man” under Khairy
