Don't portray bad image of Indians , PAS ticks off Murugiah

KUALA LUMPUR (Harakahdaily) - PAS has urged the police to put forward a comprehensive plan in weeding out gangsterism from the Malaysian society and not just focus its fight within the Indian community.

PAS information chief Idris Ahmad was responding to a call by deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department T. Murugiah, who reportedly said the police should pay more attention to the issue of gangsterism in the Indian community which he claimed was getting serious.

Idris said if the police were to follow what he called "the emotional directive" of Murugiah, the problem of gangsterism could not be solved, adding that all communities in the country faced the same scourge. “Murugiah’s statement portrays a bad image of the Indian community and it should not have come from him as a minister,” said Idris, adding that gangsterism must be curbed at all levels including those under the protection of VIPs and politicians.

“Gangsterism exists everywhere in the country. It even appears during elections, for example when our Youth headquarters was attacked during the Bagan Pinang by-election,” reminded Idris, pointing out that areas such as Chow Kit, Brickfields and Puchong in the Klang Valle had seen a mushrooming of gangsters and money lenders.Idris said police must beef up their surveillance and investigations as those involved in gangsterism was also involved in other serious crimes such as murder, abduction, torture and assault.PAS, said Idris, pinned its hopes on the police to carry out their duty with honesty and not collaborate with criminals.“Let's stop them, regardless of whether they are gangsters from the Indian, Chinese or Malay community, as no racial and religious groups tolerate thugs in their community,” he said.
