'47 Minutes of Silence' to midnight

Kuala Lumpur will see a flurry of activity this Thursday as the nation celebrates Malaysia Day as a national holiday for the first time since Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore formed Malaysia in 1963.Three NGOs - Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM), the KLSCAH civil rights committee and Malaysians for Beng Hock - will kick off the event on the eve of Malaysia Day with '47 Minutes of Silence - Peace for Malaysia' at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall tomorrow night.

In a statement, supported by 53 other NGOs and one political party, the organisers said the event, which is open to the public, will be a symbolic show of unity by the “silent majority” of Malaysians seeking to reclaim the promise of “fraternity and freedom” that was embodied by the formation of Malaysia. The group will assemble at 11pm, and the 47 minutes of silence will start at 11.12pm till 11.59pm capped by the singing of the national anthem when the clock strikes 12am.

On Malaysia Day itself, Annexe Gallery at Central Market will host Sape Solidarity, beginning at 3pm with a showcase called the Sape Tour, a collaboration of four Sarawakian artists comprising two musicians on the sape (a traditional Sarawakian lute, left), a dancer who will perform the Iban Ngajat dance, and a Kayan singer. The event, organised by a group of NGOs will run till midnight, and also feature performances by various performers such as Silent Keat's electronica, Black, Rahmat Harun and Azmyl Yunar. It will include two photo exhibitions - one on the Sarawak Road Shows, a voluntary project to register and educate voters, and the other on the Bakun dam - on top of a mini-Sarawak film festival featuring local and overseas-made films on Sarawak.
