A Kugan's blood confirmed at scene, court told

The Sessions Court in Petaling Jaya was today told that detailed chemical analysis has matched blood samples from A Kugan's clothes to blood samples drawn from the curtains at the scene of the incident. cience officer from the Chemistry Department, Petaling Jaya, Aedrianee Reza Aini, 29,described how four procedures were used to extract and analyse exhibits, including the blood samples from Kugan who died in police custody last year. Aedrianee said the procedures were applied after getting the 17 exhibits from two investigating officers, ASP Mohammad Zainal Abdullah and Insp Mohamad Khairi Kamaruddin, on Jan 22, 28 and 29 last year.

The four procedures were extracting the DNA, quantisation, amplication and electrophoresis. Aedrianee said the examination and analysis carried out by the Chemistry Department on the exhibits showed four results based on comparison made on the shirt and pants worn by Kugan and also the curtains at the scene of the incident. "First, the DNA profile obtained from the blood stain on a cotton bud taken from the shirt and pants matched other blood specimens labelled with Kugan's name, indicating that the DNA is identified from the same source. "The DNA profile from the stain on the curtain was consistent with the original from the specimens labelled with Kugan's name," she added.

'Another DNA source also found'

She said the second result found a profile of a man which did not match Kugan's blood, adding that this indicated that the DNA was from a different source. Aedrianee, who is now with the Johor branch Chemistry Department, said that after all the procedures had been conducted, she prepared the report on Feb 3, 2009.
She is testifying in the trial of Constable V Navindran who is being charged for causing serious injury to Kugan at the interrogation room of the D9 office, at Taipan Police Station, USJ, Subang Jaya at 7am on Jan 16, last year. Navindran, 28, had pleaded not guilty on Oct 1 last year to two counts of causing grievous injury to Kugan, 23, a suspect in the thefts of luxury cars. Questioned by Navindran's counsel, PM Nagarajan, Aedrianee said she found three DNA profiles when doing an analysis on Kugan's blood specimens. Judge Aslam Zainuddin set Oct 22 for submission by both parties. Deputy public prosecutors Lailawati Ali and Azlina Rasdi prosecuted.
