MACC to Use Ground Floor for Business with Public

PUTRAJAYA, 8 APRIL, 2011: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today announced the drastic measure of conducting all business involving accused persons, suspects, witnesses and complainants on the ground floor of MACC premises with immediate effect. MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Management and Professionalism) Datuk Zakaria Jaafar said that at MACC offices which did not occupy the ground floor, especially in the states, MACC officers would monitor these people at all times.

"All business must be settled under the observation of MACC officers at all times. If anyone is allowed to be alone at the MACC office, it means there is no supervision," he told reporters here. He said the MACC had also instructed directors in the security division to conduct a thorough inspection of the entire MACC offices, either owned, rented or of common use, to ensure they met all the security requirements.

"On the security of these MACC offices, we have in force the instruction from the chief commissioner. According to the instruction to all directors of divisions, state MACC directors and MACC officers, guests or visitors are not permitted in the offices of the officers. Meetings are restricted to the waiting areas or guest rooms," he said.

Asked about the security features at the Kuala Lumpur MACC headquarters in Jalan Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur, Zakaria said instructions had been issued to the security division to ensure safety at the building. On the absence of grilles at the building, he said: "We have to look into that, perhaps in terms of the budget or requirements for the building." Zakaria also said that the MACC was most concerned about security and officers' discipline, and would not hesitate to take firm action against any officer who violated rules.

The MACC announcement on the security measures comes following the death of a senior Customs officer on Wednesday after a fall from the third floor of the Kuala Lumpur MACC headquarters in Jalan Cochrane.
Selangor Customs assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed, 56, had gone to the office for a discussion on a corruption case with an MACC investigating officer.

On July 16, 2009, a political aide, Teoh Beng Hock, was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after having given a statement in connection with a corruption case to the Selangor MACC office located on the 14th floor of the building.
