PKR: Vell Paari intervened in Aimst cafeteria contract

PKR today revealed more documents which allegedly prove that MIC central working committee member S Vell Paari had “intervened” to ensure that a MIC Youth leader’s company was awarded a deal to operate Aimst University’s cafeteria.

NONEAccording to PKR national strategy and policy bureau secretary S Gobikrishnan (right), this was detailed in a letter sent by the chief executive officer of MIC’s education arm Maju Institute Educational Development (MIED) on Jan 2, 2009.

“Vell Paari has himself interfered and ensured that (Penang MIC Youth leader) J Dhinagaran got the contract. This is proven by a letter by (then) MIED CEO P Chithirakala to S Samy Vellu, who was the chairperson of MIED,” Gobikrishnan told reporters today.

In the letter (see image at end of report), sighted by Malaysiakini, Chithirakala said she was about to view the presentations by some other companies that had submitted quotations, when Penang MIC Youth chief J Dhinagaran dropped Vell Paari’s name.

p chithirakala on mied 280209 03Before I could call a presentation, one Mr Dhina who claimed to be Mr Paari’s friend came to see me at MIED,” Chithirakala (left) allegedly wrote.

“(Dhinagaran) asked him to meet me to speak about the catering contract. I told him his company is shortlisted and that we will call them for a presentation soon,”

But she then allegedly added that Samy Vellu, who is Vell Paarai’s father and then MIC president, had instructed her to award the contract to the bidder with the lowest quotation.

“Now, what is Vell Paari's answer on this?” Gobikrishnan asked.

He said that, while he will report the matter to the authorities, he will continue to make exposes until the report by Dhinagaran's company Jaya Cafe Holdings Sdn Bhd and MIED is available.

Vell Paari had last week said that the MIC has instructed both parties to produce a detailed report for Gobikrishnan to peruse.

“I would like to ask Aimst University to terminate the outsourced cafeteria contract...and manage it on their own as they used to do prior to 2007,” he said.

Vell Paari: I didn’t intervene

Contacted today, Vell Paari denied having intervened in this and said he did not even know that Jaya Cafe Holdings Sdn Bhd had been awarded the contract until a forensic audit of the matter was commissioned by MIED.

vell paari vellpaari“I never interfered in the contract. Never did I ever take part. Never had I any knowledge that the contract was given to Dhinagaran's company,” he said.

He clarified that Chitirikala had told him that someone had introduced Dhinagaran to her as the vice-president of a football club, of which Vell Paari (right) was president.

“Dhinagaran did not use my name. In politics, it's common for people to ask you things and for you to direct them to the right parties.”

Following the forensic probe, Dhinagaran had explained the matter to MIED and everything was found to be above board, he said.

“Whatever Gobikrishnan is talking about was blasted in the newspapers a long time ago when MIED made police reports on the matter,” said Vell Paari.

“We went to court with regard to Chitrakala and she paid back the money, about RM8.5 million. MIED does things on legal advice.”

He also said the audit report exposed by PKR had been commissioned by MIED itself - “not by inspector Gobikrishnan” - to rectify the situation.

“The Registrar of Companies (now the Companies Commission of Malaysia) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission have investigated this. I have gone to the ROC myself,” he said.

Nevertheless, he said, he expects Jaya Cafe Holdings Sdn Bhd and MIED to have their report ready in two weeks, and reiterated that he wants DAP’s Tony Pua to help Gobikrishnan peruse it.

“If we have done anything criminal, report us to the authorities. I will drive him to MACC myself,” he quipped.
