Dare an Umno member assault an Umno minister? Sorry Kamalanathan, you're from MIC

COMMENT: It's sad but true. Politically-associated violence is becoming more rampant in the country.
Politicians receiving bodily harm and cases of assault in public are not uncommon these days and no longer perceived as isolated incidents.

It's not surprising too when some Malaysian politicians are also being called gangsters publicly.

The recent assault of Deputy Education Minister Datuk P Kamalanathan by an Umno Youth member only seems to suggest that violence is deemed acceptable in a society which values peace and harmony.

Isn't that shameful!

The act of violence by the Hulu Selangor division Umno Youth member should be condemned outright, no matter which way one looks at it.

He has absolutely no right to punch the deputy minister who was at that time performing his official duty.
If there was a misunderstanding, the matter should have been settled amicably instead of violently.

Was it a case of Umno having no respect for an MIC leader like Kamalanathan or was it just a matter between the two men?

On Jan 12, Kamalanathan, who is also Hulu Selangor MP, was assaulted by a man who was later identified as Mohamad Rizuan Suhaimi, the Hulu Selangor Umno Youth assistant secretary.
Kamalanathan was punched by Rizuan following his dissatisfaction with the former for having denied his wife who is a teacher a transfer to the district.

A scuffle apparently broke out after Kamalanathan, who is also an MIC central working committee member, rejected the transfer request. Rizuan was said to have lost his cool and struck the deputy minister on the neck.

Kamalanathan lodged a police report following the assault. Selangor police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan took a personal interest in the case and had since revealed that the investigation papers on the assault were submitted to the Attorney-General's chambers on Jan 15.

Since the incident, people have been asking whether Kamalanathan would have been punched by the Umno member if he was from Umno.

It has even been described as a case of Umno bullying the MIC. Assuming an MIC member punched an Umno minister at an official function, the outcome would be unthinkable.

Political scientist Dr Chandra Muzaffar, however, said the public should not generalise the incident and pit one party against another.

He told theantdaily that the incident was likely that of an individual who suddenly lost his head but the show-cause letter given him by his party should reveal what had actually taken place.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor condemned the act by the Umno Youth man, adding that a show-cause letter has been issued to Rizuan.

He said the Umno leadership regretted the incident and the party rejected any form of violence.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has also revealed that Rizuan met him to explain the incident, adding that no matter what the explanation may be, there was no justification for the assault on Kamalanathan.
