KUALA LUMPUR: MIC President G Palanivel has announced key changes at the State Liaison Committee level, including Ramasamy Muthusamy taking over from him as the Chairman of the Perak State Liaison Committee, hardly 24 hours after former MIC President S Samy Vellu pointed out that “the MIC President is not God”.
Among other changes, Ganesan Arumugam will take over the position of S Sothinathan as the Negeri Sembilan State Liaison Committee Chairman. Sothinathan was a one-time protégé of Samy Vellu.
“Sothinathan has very magnanimously agreed to relinquish his position as Negeri Sembilan State Liaison Committee Chairman, at my request, to concentrate at the national level,” said Palanivel in a statement.
Rajoo Vyraperumal will replace Tapah MP and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports M Saravanan, known to be close to Samy Vellu, as the new Wilayah State Liaison Committee Chairman.
“Nedunchelian will take over the previous position of Rajoo as the Wilayah State Liaison Committee Deputy Chairman,” said Palanivel. ”Jacob Samuel, as the new Selangor State Liaison Committee Secretary, replaces Parthiban.”
There will also be changes in the respective State Liaison Committees, he added, but these will be announced by the respective Chairman of the State Liaison Committees.
”All appointments take effect immediately,” stressed the MIC Chief. “I have issued letters to all concerned.”
Palanivel thanked Saravanan, Sothinathan and Parthiban for their services rendered in their previous positions.
The MIC Chief had recently announced that he would be “introducing changes in MIC in stages for a vibrant, dynamic and focused vision for the Indian community in Malaysia”.
Saravanan, in an immediate reaction, claimed that “he (Palanivel) doesn’t have the power to remove me, but only to appoint”.
“Maybe he didn’t read the constitution well. Maybe he doesn’t know,” he said. “He needs to show me which article of the constitution allows him to remove me.”
He has scheduled a media briefing on Wed at the MIC Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
“It’s a violation of the party constitution,” claimed former MIC Strategic Director and Samy Vellu’s son, Vell Paari Samy. “The president is supposed to protect the party’s constitution, but I think he wants to show the world how he can easily ignore the constitution.”
Palanivel is trying to instil fear in people to get respect
Article 60(4) of the MIC Constitution, said Vell Paari, calls for the President to consult the Central Working Committee (CWC) on appointments.
“He’s unaware that he is dealing with a new generation of MIC and his school of thought is not going work for long,” said Vell Paari who had been axed earlier by Palanivel.
“He’s trying to instil fear in people to get respect, but it’s going to be a losing battle for him.”
He warned that the party risked being deregistered following the President being in non-compliance on the directive by the Registrar of Societies for the party to hold re-election for three vice-presidential posts and 24 positions in the CWC on the grounds that irregularities in the earlier election had affected the outcome and rendered them invalid.
