Deepa needs MIC’s help, but where are its top leaders?

QUICK TAKE: Where are MIC’s top leaders when you need them? Till today, none had come forward to defend S Deepa whose son was abducted by her Muslim convert ex-husband Izwan Abdullah.

Where are you Datuk Seri G Palanivel? Where are you, Datuk Dr S Subramaniam?

So far, we only saw your party’s subordinates coming to the defence of one helpless single Indian woman who could do with some serious help from MIC, the party which is supposed to look after the interests of the Indian community in the country.

Only MIC Youth, MIC strategic director Datuk Seri Vel Paari and the party Women’s wing had stepped forward in Deepa’s defence saying that if the police do not take action, it would mean they are condoning the act of abduction and that it is alright to abuse women.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had earlier suggested that Deepa and Izwan should settle their problems privately stating that the police was not worried over the fate of the son as he was with his father.

After receiving a lot of flak for suggesting the table talk, the IGP then changed his tune to say that Izwan was being probed for other offences and not on the civil court order to release the children to Deepa.

Abduction is a serious matter and public sentiments are on the side of the mother in the custody battle especially after the court order. Surely, the MIC top brass should know clearly where to stand on this issue.

They should have exerted pressure on the police to immediately act on the abduction.

Top MIC leaders must be aware that this concerns the plight of an abused mother and her children who were forced to convert into another religion.

Although the husband had been granted custody of the children by the Syariah Court earlier, this does not give him the right to do what he did. Abduction is a serious offence and punishable under the law.

Matters concerning the plight of Indians should be MIC’s top leadership priority and they should be the ones responding to the unfortunate event on Deepa, if Palanivel seems not to care about Deepa and her two children, its deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam should say something and assure Deepa and her family of their support.

While MIC top leaders kept mum, a senior Umno leader Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz had criticised the police stating it was indeed a kidnapping case.

MCA’s Syariah Law and Policy Implementation Special Task Force deputy chairperson Koo Chin Nam also stepped forward to defend Deepa, saying that Izwan’s action was in total contempt of the custody order awarded to S Deepa by the Seremban High Court.

“He also endangered Deepa’s life when she was dragged by the 4WD as she attempted to drag her son away from the father,” Koo was quoted as saying.

“Besides abduction, Izwan has also violated the restraining order served on him under the Domestic Violence Act”, he added.

Similarly, where was MIC when illiterate Madinah Kanniammah Abdullah was converted into Islam without her knowledge by her then boyfriend last year?

There have been several such cases in recent times and as long as the MIC’s top leaders close a blind eye on such matters, the problem will be there.

So please, Datuk Palanivel and Datuk Subramaniam, the Indian community needs your support and help on such a delicate issue as conversion, forced or otherwise.

Many poor, helpless Indian women are waiting for action from the MIC and be honoured to know that for them, MIC and its leaders could be their only hope.
