DAP reveals 111-year-old army voter

KUALA LUMPUR: After PAS revealed a series of discrepancies in the electoral roll, DAP has now discovered a 111-year-old military man on the voters list for the Bagan Pinang state seat.Based on the list prepared by the Election Commission (EC), it was revealed that Hisni Isnain was born on July 24, 1900.
“And Hisni is registered under the military ID 'T1102918'. I thought soldiers retire in their 40s,” quipped DAP youth chief Anthony Loke.

Speaking at the DAP headquarters here, Loke also said he found various other discrepancies in his own Rasah parliamentary seat; where there were 21 voters registered in an address of a shoplot in Metrix Medan, Jalan Manickavasagam.“The 21 people, consisting of 10 Chinese and 11 Indians, carry different surnames. It's obvious they are not family members,” he said, flanked by DAP election committee secretary Vincent Wu.Asked who was the tenant of the shoplot, the DAP leader alleged that the premise was currently being used as an unofficial service centre by MCA.

'Two wives with same name'

He also disclosed another case involving a military personnel, who appeared to have two wives with the same name registered as postal voters in his constituency.“Both their names is Khadijah Husin and they even share the same birthday on Feb 20.“But one was born in 1970 while the other in 1979. We suspect both are the same person and there is an error in the electroral roll,” he said.

When Loke raised the matter with the EC, the DAP leader was told that anyone could change their voting address provided they had revised it at the National Registration Department (NRD).“In other words, it doesn't matter if 100 people are registered in a same address.

“The NRD and EC would just comply,” he said, adding that these were just some examples of the mess in the electoral system. He then offered a solution; anyone who wished to change their address in their MyKad should bring proof that they were living in the new address.“They should at least bring their water bill or telephone bill as a supporting document,” he said.

EC deputy chief criticised

On a related matter, Loke criticised EC deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar for saying that the commission might not adopt all the recommedations made by the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reforms.Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak announced the formation of the committee on Aug 16 in order to mitigate his dwindling popularity after his failure in handling the Bersih 2.0 mass rally.

Wan Ahmad, in an interview with a Chinese daily yesterday, said the EC would have to study the feasibility of the recommendations as only it knew how to run polls in Malaysia. He also stressed that the electoral body was independent and free from any government influence.Loke said it was peculiar that during debate with Bersih 2.0 chairman S Ambiga last month, Wan Ahmad said EC had no power to institute electoral reforms without Parliamentary approval.“And all of a sudden, EC becomes powerful enough to say they can reject PSC's recommendations. Wan Ahmad should really make up his mind,” he said.
