Penang gov't denies demolishing Hindu shrine

The Pakatan Rakyat government in Penang continues to be assailed by allegations that it is out to marginalise the Indian community. The latest rumour circulating via the SMS accuses the state government of demolishing a shrine in Kampung Jawa, Seberang Jaya, causing panic among Pakatan supporters.Only last week, one calling for an anti-DAP rally at the party's Penang headquarters had irked its leaders, who claimed the message was circulated by "racist elements" ahead of the state convention in December.

Although, the identity of the 'rumour-monger' is not known, DAP has arrived at the conclusion that the texts, usually tinged with racial slurs, are the doing of those who claim to be 'the third force'.These developments are viewed by the DAP as a 'frail' attempt by the BN to discredit the state government ahead of the coming general election, widely speculated to be early next year.

"The rumour is so powerful that it has reached Kedah and Selangor," said DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) committee member Satees Muniandy ."Our parliamentarians from other states are calling us up to check if the demolition of the shrine actually took place," he added during a press conference in Butterworth today.
Satees, who is Batu Kawan Dapsy secretary, denied that the shrine, which is on private land, was demolished by the state. He added that a problem existed between the landowner and temple committee, as the former had recently removed an extended part of the shrine after obtaining a court order for the latter to vacate the site."The allegations are baseless and borders on malicious slander to steer the Indians away from Pakatan Rakyat," said Satees, who is also assistant to Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy.

Alternative site proposed

Satees said Bagan Dalam assemblyperson A Thanasekharan has proposed an alternative site for the shrine so that the problem will be resolved. He added that the assemblyperson has also pledged RM9,000 to provide a roof for the shrine, after a visit to the site yesterday with Ramasamy. When contacted, Thanasekharan said "nothing much can be done about it" since the land on which the shrine sits is private property. The owner has also got a court order to have the shrine removed from the land," he said."So the owner came with his demolition team, but they were not from the state government," he claimed.
