KLANG: DAP leader Charles Santiago has urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to be more sensitive when handling issues concerning plantation workers.Commenting on the Bukit Jalil estate fiasco, the Klang MP said: “They have lived there for several decades and DBKL should provide them with appropriate compensation before asking them to vacate their houses.”
Santiago also stressed that the former Bukit Jalil estate workers were not squatters, as alleged by DBKL. The houses, he added, were built by their former employer.“The federal government has outlined certain procedures to fulfil before asking them to move out and DBKL must follow the Labour Act before taking any action,” he said.Santiago also questioned DBKL's sincerity in urging the former workers to move out by not providing appropriate compensation.
The DAP leader said DBKL should take care of estate workers' welfare because they were the backbone of the nation's economy since the 1950s.Citing the Kampung Buah Pala incident in Penang, Santiago said the residents there were given houses worth RM60,000 each, a temple and a community hall.“If the Penang state government can provide such compensation, why can't DBKL do the same?" he asked.Santiago also called on the federal government to maintain the Tamil school, temple and cemetery land in Bukit Jalil as well as to issue the land titles as soon as possible. The slated demolition in Bukit Jalil was called off upon the instructions of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, who wanted an amicable solution to be reached
