KUALA LUMPUR: A 39-year-old woman who was arrested in Pahang for allegedly extorting money from the mother of missing two-year-old Nisha Chandramohan (pic), is now being detained by Johor Baru police for a cheating case.Temerloh district police chief ACP Ahmad Fadzillah Mohamed, when contacted by The Malay Mail yesterday, said the woman was now in custody for another case that took place a few months ago."We are waiting for the woman to be handed back to Pahang police after the investigations in Johor Baru are completed."
It is learnt that her case in Johor Baru is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years prison, whipping and fine upon conviction."Once the woman is handed back to us, she will be charged in court as we have completed our investigation into the extortion case," said Fadzillah.He said this should be a lesson to other pranksters trying to take advantage of Nisha's mother, Wong Lai Lan, 21, and father, Chandramohan Govindasamy, 24."We are still investigating other reports lodged by Nisha's mother on prank calls," said Fadzillah.The 39-year-old suspect was picked up on July 3, after Wong received a call from her claiming to have seen Nisha in Gombak here.
The woman also claimed that Nisha was with her and demanded RM1,000 for her safe return.The woman also warned Wong to come alone with the money and meet her in Gombak. However, Wong and her husband informed the police.When they met the suspect, Nisha was not with her. The unemployed woman was then arrested by police at the Pekeliling Bus Terminal in Kuala Lumpur before she could board a bus that evening.Nisha was reported missing after she was taken out by her mentally ill aunt, from her grandmother's house in Taman Bukit Bendera, Mentakab, Pahang on June 4.Anyone with information on Nisha can contact the police or Chandramohan at 016-9353400.
