Tamil dailies in low-blow row
The war of words between two politically aligned Tamil dailies has taken an unpalatable twist, with lurid details, unsavoury language and name calling appearing on its pages. The editors of Tamil Nesan, owned by MIC president S Samy Vellu's family, and Makkal Osai, linked to Samy Vellu's arch nemesis S Subramaniam, are on the warpath. And their far from polite diatribe has led many readers to complain to FMT.Leading the charge on the Tamil Nesan front is A Veerasamy, popularly known as Tamil Mani, while his opponent in Makkal Osai, is M Rajenthiram.

The colour of gov't scholarships
COMMENT When Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak proposed to open scholarship opportunities to all top scorers, particularly those with 9As and above, I saluted the move and thought nothing more of the matter. A politician buckling to give popular tit-bits is nothing new, and at least he's heading in the right direction. However, it irked me that as usual the Malay-rights group, the Perkasa-led Malay Consultative Council (MPM), responded with "constructive" criticism claiming that 67 percent of the scholarships should be reserved for the Malay community. My response is this: firstly, Prof Kamaruddin Kachar, not all the 67 percent are Malaysian Malays. Some of them are actually assimilated Indonesians, whose parents hold red MyKads.

So we urged the state government to give the land to our school,” explained the parent, who wished to remain anonymous.

'Malaysia blessed due to location'
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is a "very blessed country", thanks to its location on the globe in relation to the solar system, says an eminent astrology scientist from India.G Suresh said the latitude (20 30’ North) and longitude (1120 30’ East) was most conducive as it received “positive energy” from the other planets which energised the country, and by extension, the people and all other creations within it.He said Malaysians should harness that energy through peace, close mutual cooperation and unity to move forward, and for the progress and prosperity of the country.

Messy government finances due to lax controls, says Ku Li
KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — The rising number of financial irregularities in the government and its companies and agencies was due to a lack of check-and-balance and a prime minister who is also finance minister, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said yesterday. He told The Malaysian Insider that Datuk Seri Najib Razak should solely focus on executing his duties as prime minister and not also hold the finance portfolio, claiming that such an arrangement was unwise as it did not provide for proper checks-and-balances.

Price hike: Surprise move makes people unhappy
Government surprisingly hiked fuel and sugar prices on Friday to reduce expensive subsidies, a controversial move that will save the government more than 230 million dollars this year alone. But the decision could have serious political repercussions for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and it could spark a rise in prices of other goods and services, analysts said. The government defended the subsidy cut, saying it was important to achieve its development goals and promote healthier lifestyles."The government has made a difficult, but bold decision," it said in a statement.
Special Report: Child Marriages Among Indians in Negeri Sembilan Estates
Child marriages are not uncommon in the Indian community residing at rubber estates in Negeri Sembilan. Such unions, where those tying the knot are aged 12, are attributed to gross ignorance.Last year, the Mariamman Hindu temple at the Geddes Estate saw five child marriages 'solemnised' in the absence of their respective families. Some of the 'brides' and 'grooms' were school dropouts. The 78-year-old temple priest, who wished to be identified only as Velanaranie, admitted offering his blessings to the five young 'couples'.
5-in-1 price hike: Fuel, sugar and gas up
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's administration has taken a politically risky manoeuvre by raising prices of three types of fossil fuels, sugar and cooking gas. Both RON95 grade petrol and diesel prices will be raised by RM0.05 per litre, while liquified petroluem gas (LPG) will be raised by RM0.10 per kilogramme.
In a major departure from current policy, RON97 has been cut loose and will now be based on market price."RON97 petrol will no longer be subsidised. It will be subjected to a managed loat under which the price will be determined by the automatic pricing mechanism," said a statement from the PM's Department.

All have right to vote
FMT FOCUS KUALA LUMPUR: Democracy has taken firm roots in Malaysia ever since the country held its first general election in 1955. From that early days, the people were given the responsibility of choosing a government to lead the country. They had tasted democracy and the voting trend through the years had been peaceful. But the 1969 race riots in the aftermath of a tumultuous election interrupted the smooth curve and democracy was reined in briefly. Then it returned and the ride had all along been smooth for the ruling party until the 2008 political tsunami. In that historic polls, the Barisan Nasional won 51.4% of the popular vote while Pakatan Rakyat garnered 47.5%.
Buah Pala 2: More squatters face eviction
PENANG: Land-scarce Penang is now facing the prospects of forking out huge compensations to squatters in the aftermath of last year's Kampung Buah Pala controversy. In fact, the quantum of compensation accorded to the squatters could be the highest in the country if one were to analyse the deal.In 2009, 23 families fought tooth and nail against a developer, the Federal Court and the state government for almost six months, disobeying a legal writ for them to leave a 2.6ha plot.

'Military intelligence officers tortured me'
A solitary bulb hangs from the ceiling, barely lighting the blackened walls of the cell that trap him like a rat.In the tiny, windowless room, he battles madness from within and relentless chill from without.
He has lost all sense of time, of how long he has been left to freeze in this hole, how long he has gone without sleep.A loud rap or a kick against the door ensures he is kept on the brink of consciousness and reason.

Will it be a wait in vain for Murugiah?
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department T Murugiah is frantically hawking his "worth" to Barisan Nasional component parties MIC and Gerakan as uncertainty looms ahead. But both parties, which are themselves struggling to stay relevant in Malaysian politics, are taking their time and weighing his actual worth.Uppermost in their minds, it appears, is whether Murugiah, a former Youth chief with the People's Progressive Party (PPP), is all that he portrays and if he is “worth their investment”.
It is a known fact that Murugiah is seeking to strike a deal, any deal for that matter, as long as it includes a senatorship, which hopefully will give him a longer stint as deputy minister.Indian student scholarships: King's help sought
